Slay Your Single Holidays

Whewwwww Chile! This has been a year. Like straight hellish in so many ways. Amongst other things, I am freshly single and not so ready to mingle. Summer was cute since friends are always down to hang. Fall was okay because there were so many activities on my calendar. But as we move towards Thanksgiving and Christmas, ya girl is feeling down. This is the first time in a LONG time that I don’t have anyone to snuggle with when it’s snowing outside and I know for a fact Christmas is going to be rough unless I’m with my family. That being said, I have a plan because left to my own devices I’ll be drowning in a pint of Ben and Jerry’s, a bottle of spiked Egg Nog, and listening to Miss You Most by Mariah Carey on repeat. BTW, it’s not that deep (except for when it is) , I’m just dramatic AF.

Always Be Cute

I’m pretty sure ABC is the technique salespeople use but we’re remixing here to Always Be Cute. Now I’m not talking about looking nice to attract the male gaze (or female if that’s how you roll) because boys have cooties, I’m talking about looking cute for YOU. Depending on what kind of chick you are, this could mean a full beat face just to go to Walmart to pick up a Patti Pie or just a cute sweater with jeans and Starbucks cup while running errands, I’m a firm believer that looking nice (by your standards, no one else’s) improves your mood.

Treat Yourself

So here’s the deal, you don’t have a boo to shower you with lavish gifts the Christmas/Kwanzaa so you have to treat yourself. That thing that you’ve been eyeing but can’t quite bring yourself to buy? Get it. Boom. Done. Now Enjoy Yourself.

Hang With Your Friends

So you know all that stuff you didn’t do with your friends because you were boo’d up? Go ahead and do it now! Plan a Secret Santa party, have a onesie sleepover, go get some drinks. Fill your time that you would spend being lonely with people you love.

Will the holidays be tough for me? Prolly. Am I gonna cry? Absolutely (again, I’m dramatic). But hopefully I can still make some sweet single memories.

Hey Girl, Your Phone Is Draining Your Battery

I’m addicted to my device, and it’s killing my mental health.

My phone gives me serious anxiety. When I’m on it and scrolling through social media I feel like I’m not good enough. All of these amazingly dope people I follow are out here killing it with their amazing style, loving husbands, and frequent sponsorships and here I am being average. Every time I get a news alert I heart sinks as I read about politicians in this country who continue to put their personal interests before the well being of their constituents, Even my damn health tracker makes me feel inadequate by reminding my that I have not taken the recommended ten thousand steps that will help me reach my goal weight. It’s exhausting. It’s draining.

IMG_5774.jpg

If I’m being completely honest, I spend several hours per day on my phone and the actual value that it adds to my life is zero to none. In an effort to get my life together and feel better I’ve set some ground rules for screen time. Here are my tips to live your best life and treat your phone more like a resource and less like a necessity.

Choose Who You Follow Wisely

I recently cleaned my social media feed and I feel so much better for it. If a person’s posts and content doesn’t inspire me, make me laugh, or make me think, I hit unfollow. If a person’s posts make me feel bad about myself, I unfollow. If a person’s posts bully or demean others, then I probably wasn’t following in the first place. It’s simple. Social media is meant to connect people so we often think of the people we follow as friends but if is a friendship is toxic it’s best to end that relationship.

Designated Phone Free Times

The first half an hour after I wake up and the last half an hour before I go to bed are not for checking social media. This makes for a more peaceful morning and an easier and more restful sleep. I also place my phone face down when interacting with friends and stay off of it while at the movies. Actually enjoying the time spent with the people in front of me has made me realize that I need to be present in my day to day interactions with others.

Check Your Intent

This one is for the influencers and bloggers! Social media is a tool that we all use to promote ourselves and our message. We have all gotten caught in the numbers game. We wonder why we don’t have the followers that would reflect the quality of our content and it can be crippling. It stifles creativity and the content that we make is curated to gain more followers instead of engage the people who are already interested in what we put out there. At this point, you should ask yourself, why am I here? Am i serving a purpose or just playing the numbers game? If you’re only interested in numbers then continue on but if you’re looking to grow organically, stop stressing about it! Keep putting out quality with consistency and stop looking at what everyone else is doing with their feeds. Focusing more on me and what I’m trying to do has relieved so much stress.

Am I a perfect example of how to unplug? Absolutely not. I’m still guilty of getting on my phone to look up something on Google and then find myself scrolling down Instagram’s explore page an hour later but I’m working on it and feel much better for it.

Do you need to unplug? What are your best practices for taking a break from social media?

Cheap, Chic, + Cheerful

I enjoy long romantic walks through the clearance section and to the bank.

It seems like everyday I read an article or blog post about how millennials are financially doomed. Let's face it, costs of living are going up, wages are stagnant, and we're all essentially screwed, Honestly, most people my age are struggling and buying the most luxury fashions is not on the top of most people's priority list.

That being said I refuse to give up on being cute. Lately, I've been focusing on building a staple wardrobe with pieces that can be worn time and again without drawing attention and adding very few "statements" or conversation pieces. A huge help to adding fun and trendy items has been Rent the Runway Unlimited. I initially was put off by the price of the service but I have found it to be really helpful in enhancing my style and honestly it's well worth the cost and much cheaper than buying individual pieces.

Overall, this look was less than $100 when you factor in the cost of the unlimited service and each piece can be worn in separate looks.

Stop Doing SH** For Free!

Me walking away from BS "opportunities" that aren't really opportunities.

Storytime: Recently, a company that I had reviewed product for in the past approached me with an opportunity. Because I believe in the brand and really liked the product I said yes with no hesitation and all was well and good until I was asked how much I would like to be compensated for my work. When I tell you that I clenched, I could not actually give you a better example of the physical manifestation of my level of discomfort. I had no idea what I was worth, what to ask for, or even if I should be paid at all. I basically said, "Who me? No, I don't need to be compensated" to which the owner replied, and I'm paraphrasing here, "Yes. You do. You get paid for work". If you're a fellow creative or creator then you probably understand the shock waves that went through my body. If you're a fellow creator then you understand that people expect handouts. If you're a fellow creator you're probably used to giving handouts for the sake of "getting some great exposure". If you're a fellow creator I want you to listen real good to the advice I'm about to give you: Stop. Doing. SHIT. For. Free. #thatsall Honestly, it's that simple.

Stop doing shit for free. This is my motto for 2017 and I'm applying it to much everything. Here's why you should too!

Your Work Has Worth

When you decide to pursue your passion as a career or a side hustle, that's when you've decided to put in work. You start investing in your craft in a serious way: time and money become heavily involved. When people start to notice and reach out to you, that means they see worth in your work, they see opportunity in your audience, they see you solving a problem that they have. If anyone wants access to these things, they need to pay for it.

When You Undervalue Yourself, You Allow Others To Do The Same

In my interaction with the aforementioned business owner, I gave someone else the power to determine my worth. If I was working with someone looking to make a quick buck and take advantage, I could have left that deal pretty raw. Fortunately for me, this person gave me advice when they didn't have to. I've now sat down and thought about my practices AND pricing so that I never again give anyone the opportunity to buy me for cheap.

When You Undervalue Yourself, You Set Market Price for Others In Your Industry

If I was messy, petty, and had the energy I could publish the countless emails I get from companies wanting me to promote their products or services without even offering me the chance to test them. I often play along because I'm the worst and enjoying wasting rude people's time and eventually let them know that I cannot recommend something to my audience when I cannot vouch for its quality. At first, I wondered why anyone would have the balls to even approach me with such absurdity, but then, I realized, it's because someone else agreed to it. To that person, STOP. FULL STOP. IMMEDIATELY. Seriously, you make it more difficult for everyone else.

You Deserve Nice Things

I'm not saying that money is the key to happiness, but I will say that you cannot buy food without it and food makes me pretty damn happy. If you're putting in hours of work creating content to promote someone's brand (and I PUH-ROMISE you they're making money as a result of your efforts) then you deserve to be paid in some way, shape, or form so that you can have the things that you like and need.

So to sum all this up, If you are working for someone, you deserve to be paid what you're worth. Point blank. Period. the End.

A Girl, A Dress, and A Skirt

I feel like I have reached my fashion peek: my whole life, I have known that the day I got to wear a dress WITH a skirt I would #slay (no need for humility here it's just the truth) and here I am doing just that. Seriously though, I had an event over the past weekend that required me to wear black and silver and while I generally don't enjoy feeling obligated to wear certain attire or colors I was really excited when I found this Calvin Klein skirt on super sale. The only problem? I didn't have a top to wear with it and my level of pickiness was not conducive with my timeline.

Fast forward to the ninth hour and I had a lightbulb over the head moment: wear a dress you already have as a top! I'm not going to lie but I feel like I discovered the secret to crispy on the outside gooey on the inside grilled cheese sandwich (btw if you have the scoop, PLEASE tell me). It's the little things, I guess.

Inspired by the beautiful Taraji P. Henson

Inspired by the beautiful Taraji P. Henson

I'm generally not one to try and recreate celebrity looks. It's not that I think it's bad or that it lacks originality, I just always want to try to be fully me. That being said, every once in a while, a celebrity look fits perfectly with my style and I just have to go for it. Tara P. Henson's October cover for Glamour magazine was just so beautiful and full of life to me. Luckily for me, I already had the pieces needed to recreate this stunning look. The orange dress was an unexpected find from Marshall's, the belt came from another dress (an orange one coincidentally), and the necklace from Rocksbox (use the code jadorejoelleeeexoxo for a free month).

Until Next Time!

Black and White Maxi Dress with High Waisted Leather Shorts

Black and White Maxi Dress with High Waisted Leather Shorts

Have you ever had something in your closet that you loved but never wore? Maybe the occasion wasn't right or you just didn't have the right pieces to make it POP. So the piece just sits and waits patiently in your wardrobe for that perfect moment.

I have had this dress for THREE YEARS. Three years I tell you! And I finally found a way to wear it that truly encapsulated it's awesomeness. I tried wearing this dress over pants and other, shorter dresses and it never quite flowed the way I wanted it to. Finally, a few weeks ago a styled it with a simple pair of high waisted shorts and simple Calvin Klein Pumps. I think this dress looks best when styled simply and is allowed to flow.

My Fall 2015 Must Haves

The autumn leaves drift by my window... well not yet.

A  Perfect, early fall look.

A  Perfect, early fall look.

Pumpkin Spice Lattes are almost here. And honestly, that's only thing other than the September Issues that I like about Fall. Fall fashion is so much more fun than summer for me. While I love being scantily clad and perfectly bronzed, the deeper and earthier tones of autumn speak to my soul. Early fall is truly the best because it's still warm enough to wear shorts but it gets cool enough to layer later on in the day. This look is great for a casual date night getting drinks with your boo.

What's you favorite season and your favorite thing to wear that season?

How To Style A Coordinate Set

No it's not a dress...

I'm not going to lie, I was not planning on jumping into the coordinate set trend. I was totally fine with watching from the sidelines and being a skeptical spectator. But one day I went shopping on line and completely threw caution to the wind. Plus it was on sale.

I think part of my initial trepidation was that I am not a huge fan of matchy matchy looks. And nothing is more matchy, and possibly tacky, than wearing a skirt and top set with the same loud ass pattern on it. So I had to tread lightly.

I definitely started off with simple looks. Because the pattern is so large I did want and components of my look to compete or clash with my set. The white shorts were perfect companions for the this scuba material top and the short wedge heel keeps it from being trashy.

For my last look, I tried to class the skirt up with a beautiful (yet cheap) flowy top. I really wanted to be casually glamorous and I think I achieved it with this look. The top balanced out the form fitting skirt and kept the look from bordering on a night out look.

Coordinate Set (Sold Out but found here)

Joelle

Spring It On!

Where the hell are my spanky pants? - Bring It On

So am I the only one who spent the entire winter existing as a cave troll?  Yes? oh, well now this is awkward. Seriously though, I have shed my winter layers and it feels AHHHH-MAY-ZING. My skin is loving the warmth of the sun and a slightly cool breeze on perfect day is long overdue. I'm so excited for the nice weather that I'm planning on spending the entirety of my spring and summer in various degrees of undress.

This is my first OFFICIAL spring look and I think it's perfect. The mixed pattern of the dress really inspired me to play with pops of color and more patterns and I really hope I can explore patterns more during this season.
